What Are the National Standard Examinations?
The National Standard Examinations are national-level science examinations designed to identify students with strong conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability.
The following examinations are available:
- NSEP: National Standard Examination in Physics
- NSEC: National Standard Examination in Chemistry
- NSEB: National Standard Examination in Biology
- NSEA: National Standard Examination in Astronomy
- NSEJS: National Standard Examination in Junior Science
NSEA, NSEB, NSEC and NSEP form the first stage of the five-stage Science Olympiad programme leading to the International Olympiads in 2027.
NSEJS and the subsequent Indian National Junior Science Olympiad are administered separately by IAPT. Students interested in Junior Science should therefore follow the latest instructions published by IAPT.

Eligibility for NSEP, NSEC, NSEB and NSEA
Students applying for Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Astronomy must satisfy all the applicable official eligibility conditions.
Class and age requirements
- The student must be studying in Class X, XI or XII at the time of enrolment.
- The student’s date of birth must fall between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2012, with both dates included.
- The student must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.
- The student must have been residing and studying in India since 30 November 2024 or earlier, or studying in an Indian school system since that date.
- The student must not have passed, or be scheduled to complete, the Class XII Board examination earlier than 30 November 2026.
- The student must not have commenced or be planning to commence studies in a university or equivalent institution by 1 June 2027.
- The student must not be appearing for NSEJS 2026.
OCI students should read the special provisions contained in the official Olympiad brochure because their eligibility for the final international team is subject to prevailing court and government orders.
It is the student’s responsibility to confirm every eligibility condition. A student may be disqualified at a later stage if any information submitted during enrolment is found to be incorrect.
Eligibility for NSEJS 2026
According to the current IAPT information, a student applying for the National Standard Examination in Junior Science must:
- Be studying in Class VIII, IX or X as of 30 November 2026.
- Have a date of birth between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2013, with both dates included.
- Satisfy all other conditions published by IAPT for the Junior Science programme.
NSEJS is intended for younger students with a strong interest in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the secondary-school level.
Students whose age and class appear to make them eligible for both NSEJS and a senior NSE must remember that they cannot participate in both streams. They should consult their science teacher and read the official brochure before making a choice.
NSE 2026 Syllabus
Physics, Chemistry and Biology
The syllabus for NSEP, NSEC and NSEB is broadly equivalent to the CBSE senior-secondary level up to Class XII in the respective subject. Questions may also test the application of mathematics and scientific reasoning.
Astronomy
The NSEA syllabus broadly covers Physics and Mathematics up to the senior-secondary level, with greater emphasis on their application to elementary Astronomy.
Junior Science
The NSEJS syllabus covers Physics, Chemistry and Biology broadly up to the CBSE Class X level. Students should not assume that memorising textbook definitions is sufficient because Olympiad questions usually test conceptual understanding and unfamiliar applications.
Candidates should use the current official syllabus instead of depending entirely on commercial books or previous-year coaching material.
Senior NSE Question-Paper Pattern
For the senior National Standard Examinations, the official brochure describes the following general pattern:
- 48 multiple-choice questions carrying three marks each
- One correct alternative in each of these questions
- One negative mark for an incorrect answer in this section
- 12 multiple-choice questions carrying six marks each
- One or more alternatives may be correct
- Credit is awarded only when all correct alternatives and no incorrect alternatives are selected
- Examination duration: two hours
Students must check the current subject-specific instructions because language options and other examination arrangements may vary.
Examination Fee
The enrolment fee is:
₹300 per student per subject
A student who enrols in more than one permitted senior subject must pay the prescribed fee separately for each subject.
Payment should be made only through the process shown on the official portal or through an authorised registered NSE centre. Students and parents should not transfer money to unknown individuals or unofficial websites.
How to Apply for NSE 2026
Students can enrol through their own school or college if it is a registered NSE centre. If the institution is not a registered centre, the student can use the direct online enrolment facility provided through the IAPT website.
Online application procedure
- Visit the official IAPT website.
- Open the NSE 2026 Student Enrolment link.
- Read the eligibility rules before beginning the application.
- Select the appropriate examination—NSEP, NSEC, NSEB, NSEA or NSEJS.
- Enter the student’s name, date of birth, class and school details exactly as recorded in the school documents.
- Select the preferred examination centre and language wherever those options are provided.
- Upload or provide the information requested by the portal.
- Pay the examination fee through the authorised payment facility.
- Review every entry before final submission.
- Save the application number, payment receipt and confirmation page.
- Check the enrolment status and examination-centre details through the official portal.
Students should complete registration several days before the deadline to allow time to correct spelling, payment or document-related problems.
Documents and Details to Keep Ready
Before opening the application, students should keep the following available:
- Correct name as recorded in school documents
- Date-of-birth proof
- Current class and school details
- School address and contact information
- Active mobile number
- Active email address
- Recent photograph, if requested
- Appropriate online-payment facility
The student’s name and date of birth should be entered consistently. Differences between school records and application details can create difficulties during later verification.
Five Stages of the Science Olympiad Programme
The senior Science Olympiad programme generally progresses through five stages:
- National Standard Examination
- Indian National Olympiad
- Orientation-cum-Selection Camp
- Pre-departure Training Camp
- International Olympiad
Qualifying in the National Standard Examination does not directly mean selection for the international team. Students must meet the prescribed selection standards at every subsequent stage.
The list of candidates selected for the Indian National Olympiads is expected to be published on the IAPT website by 15 January 2027. Selected candidates must complete the separate HBCSE registration required for obtaining their INO admit cards.
Preparation Strategy for Students
Understand concepts before solving difficult papers
Students should first develop a strong understanding of the prescribed school-level syllabus. Olympiad preparation should strengthen regular academic learning rather than replace it.
Use previous question papers
Previous papers help students understand the level of reasoning, numerical application and time management required. After completing a paper, analyse why each incorrect answer was wrong.
Maintain an error notebook
Record difficult concepts, wrong calculations and frequently confused formulas. Revising an error notebook is often more useful than repeatedly reading entire textbooks.
Practise with a timer
The examinations are only two hours long. Students should practise selecting solvable questions first and avoid spending too much time on a single difficult problem.
Be careful with negative marking
For questions carrying negative marks, random guessing may reduce the total score. Attempt such questions only after eliminating options logically.
Seek guidance without losing originality
Teachers can explain concepts, suggest dependable resources and conduct practice sessions. However, students should develop their own problem-solving ability instead of memorising solutions.
Guidance for Parents and Teachers
Parents should encourage participation without creating excessive pressure. Olympiad examinations are highly competitive, and one result does not determine a student’s scientific ability or future.
Science teachers and Headmasters can help students by:
- Identifying interested and eligible students
- Explaining the differences between senior NSE and NSEJS
- Verifying class and date-of-birth eligibility
- Informing parents about the fee and deadline
- Helping students access official syllabi and previous papers
- Conducting voluntary problem-solving sessions
- Reminding students to preserve registration and payment records
Teachers should especially verify the eligibility of Class X students because some birth dates may appear to fall within both junior and senior ranges, while participation in both streams is not permitted.
Common Registration Mistakes to Avoid
- Selecting the wrong subject or examination
- Ignoring the prescribed date-of-birth range
- Entering a name different from school records
- Applying simultaneously for NSEJS and a senior NSE
- Overlooking the timetable clash between NSEB and NSEJS
- Paying through an unofficial website
- Waiting until the final day
- Failing to save the payment receipt
- Not checking the final enrolment status
- Depending on social-media messages instead of official notices
