UPSC ESE Vacancy Details 2027

UPSC expects to fill approximately 480 vacancies through ESE 2027. This figure includes 19 PwBD vacancies: 11 for specified locomotor-disability categories, six for Hard of Hearing, one for Low Vision, and one for Specific Learning Disability and Multiple Disability. The final vacancy total may change.

Reservation for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and eligible PwBD candidates will be provided according to Government of India rules. Candidates should not assume that every disability category is identified as suitable for every service. The service-wise functional classification and physical requirements in the official notification must be checked carefully.

Engineering Disciplines and Participating Services

A candidate may apply under one of the four notified engineering categories. Allocation to a service or post depends on final rank, the preferences submitted by the candidate, available vacancies and medical fitness.

Notified services include the Central Engineering Service, Central Engineering Service (Roads), Survey of India Group A Service, Border Roads Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering Service, Indian Railway Management Service, Indian Defence Service of Engineers and other listed posts.

2. Mechanical Engineering

An applicant must satisfy the nationality conditions stated in the notification. Eligible categories include a citizen of India and certain subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 intending to settle permanently, and specified persons of Indian origin who migrated to India. Documents and Details to Keep Ready

  • Matriculation or Class 10 certificate with the correct name, parents’ names and date of birth;
  • Engineering degree, marks memos or details of the qualifying examination;
  • Aadhaar card or another accepted Government-issued photo ID;
  • Valid and active mobile number and email address;
  • Category, EWS, OBC-NCL, PwBD or Ex-Servicemen certificate, if applicable;
  • Recent photograph and a live photograph as instructed by the portal;
  • Signature made three times, one below another, on plain white paper using black ink;
  • Online payment facility, where the fee applies.

The application instructions state that photograph and signature files should be in JPG format, generally between 20 KB and 300 KB each. Candidates should follow the live portal’s latest upload instructions because technical specifications may be updated.

Practical Checklist Before Final Submission

  • Confirm that your qualification is accepted for the engineering category selected.
  • Calculate your age as on 1 January 2027 and claim relaxation only when eligible.
  • Read the service-wise medical and physical standards, particularly for PwBD eligibility.
  • Check that your name and date of birth exactly match the matriculation certificate.
  • Select the examination centre early; most centres have a capacity ceiling.
  • Use a clear photograph, live photograph and signature that meet UPSC instructions.
  • Verify the fee status and do not close the portal before final submission is confirmed.
  • Download the completed application and keep the URN and application number safely.
Useful preparation advice: Start with the official syllabus and recent UPSC question papers. Since Preliminary marks count toward final merit, candidates should balance General Studies and Engineering Aptitude with their technical discipline instead of treating Stage I only as a screening test.
