Olympiad Exams 2026–27: Science, Mathematics and Computing Olympiads—Eligibility, Dates, Registration and Preparation
Olympiad Exams 2026–27: A Gateway to Careers in Science, Mathematics and Computing
Olympiad examinations offer talented school students an opportunity to develop advanced problem-solving, scientific reasoning, mathematical thinking and programming skills. They are not ordinary memory-based examinations. Students are generally expected to apply concepts, analyse unfamiliar situations and arrive at logical solutions.
India conducts recognised Olympiad programmes in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Junior Science, Mathematics and Informatics. Students who progress through the prescribed selection stages may receive an opportunity to represent India at international Olympiads.
The 2026–27 Olympiad cycle is particularly important for eligible students because registration for the National Standard Examinations in Science is currently open only until 14 September 2026.

Eligibility for NSEP, NSEC, NSEB and NSEA
A student applying for the senior Science Olympiad stream must satisfy all the official eligibility conditions. The principal requirements include:
- The student must be studying in Class X, XI or XII at the time of enrolment.
- The date of birth must be between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2012, inclusive.
- The student must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.
- The student must have been residing and studying in India, or studying under an Indian school system, since 30 November 2024 or earlier.
- The student must not have passed or be scheduled to complete the Class XII Board examination before 30 November 2026.
- The student must not be appearing for NSEJS 2026.
- The student must not have begun, or be planning to begin, university-level studies by 1 June 2027.
Candidates should read the complete official eligibility rules because special provisions may apply in certain cases.
Who Can Apply for NSEJS 2026?
The National Standard Examination in Junior Science is intended for younger students interested in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Subject to the complete official conditions, applicants must:
- Be studying in Class VIII, IX or X as of 30 November 2026
- Have been born between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2013, inclusive
- Fulfil the residence, study and other conditions prescribed by IAPT
- Not participate in NSEP, NSEC, NSEB or NSEA during the same Olympiad cycle
Students who appear eligible for both the junior and senior streams should consult their teachers and carefully study the official brochure before selecting an examination.
Five Stages of the Science Olympiad Programme
The journey towards representing India at an International Science Olympiad ordinarily involves the following stages:
- National Standard Examination
- Indian National Olympiad
- Orientation-cum-Selection Camp
- Pre-departure Training Camp
- Participation in the International Olympiad
Merely qualifying in the first stage does not guarantee selection for the Indian team. Students must satisfy the required eligibility and performance standards at every subsequent stage.
Mathematical Olympiad 2026–27
The first stage of India’s Mathematical Olympiad programme is the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM).
IOQM 2026 was conducted on 6 September 2026, and fresh registration for that examination has closed. Students who have already appeared should follow the official portal for results and subsequent instructions.
The next announced stages are:
| Stage | Examination date | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Regional Mathematical Olympiad—RMO | 15 November 2026 | Three hours |
| Indian National Mathematical Olympiad—INMO | 17 January 2027 | Four-and-a-half hours |
Only students qualifying under the official selection rules can proceed to the later stages. RMO and INMO questions require students to write detailed mathematical proofs rather than merely select answers.
Indian Computing Olympiad 2027
The Indian Computing Olympiad is a nationwide programme organised by the Indian Association for Research in Computing Science. It identifies school students with exceptional ability in algorithms and computer programming.
The competition ultimately selects four students to represent India at the International Olympiad in Informatics.
The first round ordinarily offers two routes:
- Zonal Informatics Olympiad: A written examination based on computational thinking and algorithms
- Zonal Computing Olympiad: A programming examination supporting languages such as C++, Java and Python
A student may appear for either examination or both and qualify for the next stage through either route. The second stage, the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics, is a programming examination in which C++ is used.
Registration for ICO 2026 has closed. According to IARCS, ICO 2027 registrations are expected to open in October 2026, with details scheduled to be announced during the second half of September 2026.
Why Should Students Participate in Olympiads?
1. Stronger conceptual understanding
Olympiad preparation encourages students to understand why a scientific or mathematical principle works instead of memorising an answer.
2. Better problem-solving skills
Students learn to divide a complex problem into smaller parts, compare different approaches and check whether their reasoning is correct.
3. Exposure to national-level competition
Participants can understand their academic level by attempting challenging questions alongside students from different parts of India.
4. Preparation for future studies
The reasoning skills developed through Olympiad preparation can support later learning in science, engineering, medicine, mathematics, data science and computer science.
5. Academic opportunities
High achievement at advanced stages may bring recognition, training opportunities and, in some cases, special admission consideration from certain institutions. Such benefits are subject to each institution’s prevailing admission rules and should always be verified from its official website.
How Students Can Prepare Effectively
Strengthen school-level concepts
Students should first understand their prescribed school syllabus thoroughly. Advanced preparation without clear fundamentals often leads to confusion.
Solve previous examination papers
Previous papers help students understand the difficulty level, question style and time required. Students should analyse their mistakes after every practice test.
Maintain an error notebook
Record incorrect answers, misunderstood concepts, calculation errors and useful problem-solving techniques. Revise this notebook regularly.
Practise under timed conditions
Completing mock papers within the actual examination duration improves question selection and time management.
Use reliable resources
Give priority to official syllabi, previous papers, NCERT textbooks and standard reference books. Avoid relying entirely on unverified social-media material.
Protect the student’s well-being
Olympiad participation should promote curiosity, not fear. Parents and teachers should encourage students without treating one examination result as a final judgment of their intelligence or future potential.
Guidance for Teachers and Headmasters
Schools can identify students who demonstrate curiosity, conceptual understanding and consistent interest in science, mathematics or computing.
Teachers can support them by:
- Explaining the different Olympiad streams
- Checking age and class eligibility
- Helping students select an appropriate subject
- Sharing official registration links
- Conducting weekly problem-solving sessions
- Providing previous question papers
- Encouraging girls and rural students to participate
- Monitoring registration before the deadline
- Avoiding unnecessary pressure or unrealistic promises
Students should be encouraged based on their interest and potential—not merely their regular examination marks.
